7 Villages to Explore Round Zadar
Zadar is about to become the centre of your holiday universe? Good call. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t broaden your horizons a bit more. After all, Zadar may have it all, but the charm of a Dalmatian village by the sea can be found only if you go to one. Here are a few places close to Zadar that have a bit more to offer than just breathtaking nature and crystal clear water:
Zaton. The smell of the pine tree - one of the typical characteristics of the Adriatic sea. In Zaton it serves as the perfect shade on the beach and it clears your lungs. This popular seaside resort has it all - sporting facilities of all kinds, cultural historical heritage and a great variety of entertaining activities. It’s also home to a diving centre so take note, all you diving fans.
Petrčane. Once primarily a fishing village, the almost millennium-old picturesque place caught the eye of the organizers of the Garden Festival and it was first held there in 2006. The event may have moved to Tisno in the meantime, but Petrčane remains a vibrant but traditional Dalmatian village. Check out what attracted the party goers there in the first place!
Sukošan. Famous for its hospitality and excellent wine, the village has one of the biggest marinas on the Adriatic sea. It’s safe to suppose that the majority of younger travellers won’t come by boat, but they still might be interested in a variety of watersports, particularly windsurfers who can fight the waves and the wind all year round.
Posedarje. One word is enough for all those who love culinary delicacies - pršut (‘cured ham’). The one produced the traditional way in Posedarje is among the most renowned ones. The winds coming down the Velebit mountain won’t only refresh you, but will treat your palate to an extraordinary must-try taste.
Karin. Yet again, one word says it all - mud. What distinguishes Karin from other villages by the sea, is the healing mud on the beach available for everyone. Wallowing in the mud and having your picture taken - a unique way to spend holiday, or is it?
Maslenica. Originally named after olive groves surrounding the village, the village is also famous for its namesakes - the two Maslenica Bridges. Adrenaline fans will be delighted with one of them, because it’s the perfect place to do bungee jumping. Active holiday seekers will also be happy to learn that Maslenica has many tracks for cyclists. It’s cycling with a view - and what a view it is!
Starigrad-Paklenica. There aren’t many places in Croatia, even worldwide, where you can go rock-climbing on the mountain and swimming in the sea in one day. Well, Starigrad is one of them. Situated by the sea at the foot of the Velebit mountain, the ancient village truly has a lot to offer.
