5 reasons to visit Zadar in 2024

Zadar, Aerial View

Ancient & modern. Peaceful & vibrant. Easy to get under your skin. And with a brilliant location allowing you to visit top places of interest including the most popular Croatian national parks. Indeed, there are a bunch of compelling reasons to come and see Zadar for yourself in 2024. Here are a few, just for you:

Unique modern attractions

Sit down on a promenade step and take in the fascinating play of colors as the sun sets on the horizon. Yes, the city is well-known for its breathtaking sunset. And there’s no better place to experience it than right at the site of the city’s top attractions.

Created by Zadar native Nikola Bašić, the Sea Organ celebrates the neverending flow of nature. Similarly, the Greeting to the Sun light show is not only a mini model of the solar system, but it also gives a special nod to the city. Namely, the largest circle representing the Sun has a chrome ring with the names of four patron saints of Zadar.

Walkable experience of history

Every step you take along the narrow cobbled streets and across old squares such as Trg pet bunara (Cro. Five Wells Square) or Narodni trg (Cro. People’s Square), you are going on a trip down history lane. Dating back several millennia, the city has quite a fascinating (hi)story to tell.

Ancient Roman heritage such as the Roman Forum, medieval sights like St Donatus’ Church as well as the Venetian heritage in the form of defensive walls and gates are all within a walking distance on the historical peninsula. The unique value of the latter has been recognized by UNESCO, listing it as a World Heritage Site.

Fascinating museums

Charming and centric! You can visit thematically different museums on the historical peninsula that won’t take up much of your time, but will offer you fun and a valuable insight into the city. They include the Archaeological Museum and the Gold and Silver of Zadar right at the Forum, as well as the Museum of Illusions and the Museum of Ancient Glass on top of the eastern defensive walls.

Sea & the city

You can have an urban and beach holiday in one! After all, Zadar has an exciting vibe of a modern city, and it also has a few beaches such as the central Kolovare beach, Puntamika with a view of the city, and Borik, all  within relatively easy reach from the historical peninsula.

Exciting lifestyle

You will love to do as the natives of Zadar do! Namely, it’s the perfect mood to embrace on holiday. Just visit the buzzing market, lively streets such as Kalelarga and historical neighborhoods, e.g. Varoš or Kampo Kastelo, and simply appreciate life, enjoy great food, and have ‘coffee’ for hours on end. Just because you can. It's the essence of fjaka,  it’s the wonderful art of doing nothing.
